THE ADACHI CONTEMPORARY UKIYOE AWARD 2019

The Adachi Foundation was established in 1994 to preserve the techniques of Japanese woodcut printing and pass on such distinctly techniques for the future generations. The Adachi Contemporary Ukiyo-e Award is the project of The Adachi Foundation to explore Ukiyo-e artists in 21st Century who work for Japanese traditional woodcut printing to introduce its very unique techniques and new possibility to the world. We are looking forward to seeing “Contemporary Ukiyo-e artist” and working for “Ukiyo-e Now” together.

The Prize winner will be given an opportunity to produce his or her work into a woodcut print with contemporary carvers and printers. We are looking forward to getting many applications.

 

【 Application Information 】

What is “Contemporary Ukiyo-e” ?

Ukiyo-e was enjoyed by people in Edo era (1603-1867) as one of the way of mass communications. Ukiyo-e artists drew all kinds of genre which could be attractive to people those days.

We expect your “Contemporary Ukiyoe”needs to be (have):
1. Generally widely appealing to everybody like Ukiyo-e was
2. Newly unique and original like Ukiyo-e was
3. “Beauty of Omission” which never can be expressed by photos or hand painting in order to show the beauty of woodcut printing
4. clear beautiful color which can be created by the combination of Washi paper and water based ink in order to show the beauty of woodcut printing
5. showing “NOW”!!

1) What should be filed

Your history and portfolio of your past works

Format: A book of 2 – 10 pages in A4 or letter size paper

The purpose of the award is discovering “Ukiyo-e Artist in 21st Century”. In order to know applicants to seek their suitability as the Ukiyo-e artist, we are screening applicants with their portfolio.

 
2) Applicant qualification

No limit of the career, age and nationality of the applicant.

 
3) How to apply

Please download the application form. Mail completed application form with your portfolio to The Adachi Foundation.
* Shipping cost needs to be paid by the applicant.

4) Application fee

Free (Shipping or other fee for the application must be paid by the applicant)

 
5) Prize

1st Prize
300,000 yen + your picture will be made as a woodcut print by the contemporary artisans and complete print will be given to you

2nd Prize
150,000 yen + your picture will be made as a woodcut print by the contemporary artisans and complete print will be given to you

7) Schedule of the application

・Starts from July of 2019

・Final day of the application : December 25th of 2019

・Announcement of the winner : around January of 2020

・Begins to create the woodcut prints of the prize winners around April of 2020

・The complete woodcut prints of the prize winners are planned to be displayed at the showroom of the Adachi Foundation.

► The picture must be the original work of the applicant created for this award and never applied for another competition or award. The work for this award must not infringe on other’s copyright.

► The copyright of winner’s pictures belongs to The Adachi Foundation.

► If the request of commercial using the image or print itself of the prize winner is made, the Adachi Foundation will handle the case with the prize winner’s permission .

► The Adachi Foundation does not accept any application which does not meet the regulations of the award.

► The application can not be accepted if it is out of or lack of application qualification.

► The portfolio can be retuned if only the applicant requests. It can be returned only the case if shipping address is in Japan and the shipping fee is paid by the applicant.

► We will not be able to answer about any questions about the selection.

► We only use all privacy information of applicants for this award for the purpose of the award. Please see our general privacy policy.
